Call for Participation

Submissions open Monday 13 July – Friday 28 August 2015.  The eResearch Australasia Conference 2015, to be held in Brisbane 19 – 23 October, comes at a critical and opportune time in the life of Australia’s eResearch program. Most of the programs funded through the Department of Innovation’s NCRIS and Super Science have delivered significant capabilities to the Australian research community, so the conference theme, “Towards Unified Global Research” is entirely appropriate as some of these projects wind down by the end of this year and there are many successes to be showcased. To highlight these capabilities, a space has been made available at the conference venue to host a series of demonstrations that illustrate the impact eResearch can have on research during breaks/lunch. This call for participation seeks to identify organisations and individuals that are interested and able to participate in this demonstration program.

Process

A sub-committee of the eResearch conference program committee will review responses to the call for participation, assessing them against the demonstration criteria provided below. Respondents will be notified by Friday 25th September, if their demonstration has been selected for inclusion in the program. Successful respondents to the call will be required to register to attend the eResearch conference to deliver their demonstration. Successful demonstrations are very likely to be developed into case studies to support eResearch outreach and education programs post-conference.

Demonstration Criteria

Each demonstration is expected to be roughly 10 minutes long, with an additional 5 minutes for Q&A, for a maximum duration of 15 minutes. It is recognised that this is a very short amount of time, but this was chosen to ensure there are enough slots to provide a good balance of demonstrations, and hopefully focus the demonstrations on delivering a simple, sharp message to capture attention quickly. It’s important therefore that presenters are credible and are good communicators. Demonstrations should provide proof (eg. via cases studies) that eResearch is having an impact on research. In doing so demonstrations do not need to be specific to a program or capability; indeed using cases that leverage multiple eResearch capabilities/programs are encouraged. Linking a demonstration to an existing session within the conference program is also encouraged. Demonstrations can showcase a depth or breadth impact, i.e. something that has significant impact for a specific community/discipline, or minor change across a broad community/discipline, respectively. Finally, the research impact should be explicitly stated in the demonstration – don’t rely on the attendees to work it out!

Logistics

The Showcase will be held in a dedicated space in one section of the conference area. Seating will be provided to attract attendees to the demonstrations during the conference breaks and lunches, and we will endeavour to make it a cosy and inviting space for approximately 25 people. Speakers will be provided with microphones, and a large display screen will be mounted in the area to allow videos and/or live demonstrations to be shown. Demonstrations will be scheduled in the conference morning and afternoon breaks (1 slot each), lunches (2 slots each) and the periods between sessions ending and dinner (3 slots each).
