SUMMARY:AuScope Virtual Research Environments: creating computational and data infrastructures to support Innovation in Australian Earth Science Research

In 2021, research is more transdisciplinary, machine learning and artificial intelligence are now standard analysis tools, reusing existing datasets, samples and tools are common research practices. At the same time, supporting computational infrastructures have advanced: storage capacities have grown significantly, more datasets are available online, whilst online processing tools are readily accessible. Programming skills of researchers have grown significantly and they now seek less processed versions of datasets so that they can subset to their specific area of interest and then transparently develop their own derivative research outputs. Researchers increasingly want to integrate their specific data types with other datasets from multiple disciplines. It is clear that existing portals and virtual laboratories no longer meet the requirements of innovative researchers: available datasets are often highly evolved data products, whilst many online tools were designed for executing explicit workflows.\nIn 2021 the AuScope Virtual Research Environments (AVRE) Project began assessing functional/non-functional requirements for modernising the AVRE portal across a broad range of geoscience users, who had requirements from simple data processing through to complex data modelling and assimilation at petascale.\nIn this BoF, we will firstly present the outcomes from these AVRE consultations. Secondly, we will invite the audience to help plan the key components of the next iteration. We look forward to hearing from the community about how AVRE can offer services to support their research, regardless of which discipline they are from.\n\nBiography:\nJens Klump is a geochemist by training and leads the Geoscience Analytics Team in CSIRO Mineral Resources based in Perth, Western Australia. In his work on data infrastructures, Jens covers the entire chain of digital value creation from data acquisition to data analysis with a focus on data in minerals exploration. This includes automated data and metadata capture, sensor data integration, both in the field and in the laboratory, data processing workflows, and data provenance, but also data analysis by statistical methods, machine learning and numerical modelling.\n
