Focus on Research
The 2013 conference will introduce ‘Focus on Research’ day, which concentrates on how researchers and support staff use technology to support their discoveries. Focus on Research day will include a range of presentations, forums and demonstrations that will illustrate the importance of technology within the research sector and importantly how to utilise these technologies.

CAUDIT has partnered with the Research Data Storage Infrastructure (RDSI) project to provide a series of vendor technology/solution briefings for the Australian eResearch community. These briefings are targeted at technical staff within eResearch organisations in Australia (see www.aero.edu.au), and eResearch teams and ICT staff within Australian institutions.
The eResearch Technology and Solutions Briefings are scheduled weekly on Tuesdays at noon (AEST). From time to time, briefings may be held at different times to accommodate presenters, and some dates will be skipped if they clash with other events (e.g. QUESTnet, eResearch conferences, THETA).
Briefings are 1 hour in length and dedicated to a single vendor/provider.
If you are interested in contributing to this briefing program, please contact Peter Elford (p.elford@rdsi.uq.edu.au) and/or Steve Johnston (steve.johnston@caudit.edu.au).

Due to the expiration of Aeric, the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education in conjunction with the nodes and government funded projects have agreed to form the eResearch Coordination Project (eRC Project).
The eRC project has been established to facilitate the evolution of data intensive capabilities and services as well as the delivery of a practical and relatively seamless service to researchers, based on the work of RDSI, Nectar and ANDS projects.
Coordination activities are expected to:
The project will be led by eRC Director, Rhys Francis.
Intended project outcomes will be as recommended by the eRC project sponsors.
The National Computational Infrastructure has announced that the new Fujitsu Primergy supercomputer is in full production service.
Reaching 98% efficiency in the first days of service, the facility is now open to users from partner organisations.
NCI Director Professor Lindsay Botten said “NCI is supplying researchers with both the infrastructure and world class expertise required to push the boundaries of innovative research in key disciplines that are of national importance to Australia – amongst these are climate and earth systems science.”
The petascale HPC system was procured under the Australian Government’s Super Science Initiative. In line with the environmental research it supports, the machine has been christened ‘Raijin’ after the Japanese God of lightning, thunder and storms.
In the June 2013 TOP500 list of best supercomputers, Raijin sits at number one in Australia, and number 27 in the world. The peak performance of 1.1 petaflops is 8.6 times that of the previous NCI system, Vayu.

Organised by Integrated Earth Data Applications (IEDA) and Elsevier Research Data Services, the International Data Rescue Award in the Geosciences is created to improve preservation and access of research data, particularly of dark data, and share the varied ways that these data are being processed, stored, and used.
The organisers are interested in receiving submissions from groups who have developed and completed projects that have digitized previously unavailable content or that have facilitated and improved the ingestion of research data. The award will consist of a Data Rescue trophy and a check for $US 5000.
The final submission deadline is October 10, 2013. For more information see http://researchdata.elsevier.com/datachallenge or contact Lesley Wyborn (Lesley.wyborn@ga.gov.au)
The Australian National Data Service (ANDS) is running a survey as it is interested in perceptions of research data management at various institutions and of ANDS’ services.
Survey link: https://apollo.anu.edu.au/default.asp?pid=7418
Please distribute the link widely throughout your institution. Multiple responses from the same institution are welcome and encouraged. The survey should only take about 10-15 minutes to complete and:
The survey will be open until 6 July 2013. Your feedback is important to ANDS to help in its future planning, so participation is greatly appreciated.
The eResearch newsletter is normally published the first business day of each month, and submissions are due two business days prior to that. Please send items to newsletter@eresearch.edu.au. Each item should be no more than 150 words plain text, plus a link to further information.
To subscribe to the newsletter and to the eresearch-announce mailing list, please send a plain text message to majordomo@eresearch.edu.au with the words subscribe eresearch-announce in the message body.
