Macquarie University – Osseointegration Clinic Data Collection and Research Transformation

Situation – The Macquarie University’s Osseointegration clinic has grown to be the largest Osseointegration centre worldwide. The centre consists of a team of clinicians who provide input from preoperative to postoperative support. The collection, storage and analysis of this clinical data is currently done with Google Sheets and Forms and the centre has determined that this is an unsatisfactory solution for the longer term.
Task – The existing system needs to be transformed into a wholistic and reliable solution that will meet the future demands of clinicians and researchers. This includes the secure collection and storage of sensitive client information, ease of data entry by clients and clinicians, access to de-identified data for research purposes, and compliance with internal and external governance.
Action – Current technologies available to Macquarie University were evaluated and it was agreed that REDCap was the best option for the new system. An agile approach was adopted for the management of the project along with a small team consisting of a product manager (PM), two subject matter experts (SME’s) and a developer. The PM is responsible for the high-level design and priorities, the SME’s write the stories and complete testing, and the developer builds the instruments.
Result – The transformation project is well advanced with a high level of involvement from the team. By the time the conference starts the solution will be in production and more details on the results can be supplied.
Biography:
David is responsible for the development of the Neurodegenerative Disease Biobank in the Centre for Motor Neuron Disease Research at Macquarie University. After completing his Masters degree he manged the IT department of a large Australian company and later joined Fujitsu as the Oceania Program Owner for the E2E Implementation of ServiceNow.
He is passionate about the development of web tools to help organisations run their business processes more efficiently. David is a Acquia certified Drupal site builder with experience with a wide range of web development tools.
