Biography:

Dr. Stefanie Kethers is the Program Manager (Data Challenges) at ARDC. Stefanie’s main interest is in supporting people to collaborate towards common goals. Her main background is in Computer Science, and she has been working in the eResearch sector for over 15 years.

Kylie Black is a Research Data Specialist at ARDC, working in sensitive data. A librarian by training, she worked in research support in university libraries for 11 years before commencing at the ARDC in 2022.

Liv Shanahan is the PMO Lead at ARDC and brings over 15 years experience working across the research and research infrastructure sectors, assisting organisations to strategically manage programs to achieve impact through the development of impact frameworks and monitoring and evaluation systems.

Dr. Mingfang Wu is the Product Manager (Research Data Australia, Research Link Australia) with over 20 years of experience in information and data science and technology. She is passionate about developing and delivering valuable, usable and feasible national data and information platforms.

Abstract:

NB: This proposal is coordinating with the proposed BoF on Impact of Research Infrastructures.

As outlined in the 2021 National Research Infrastructure Roadmap (https://www.education.gov.au/download/13735/2021-national-research-infrastructure-roadmap/26919/2021-national-research-infrastructure-roadmap/pdf, Recommendation 7), Digital Research Infrastructure (DRI) is fundamental to Australia’s research effort. Understanding uptake – by whom, how and for what purposes such infrastructure is used, and why it is not used – is key for understanding user needs and opportunities, and increasingly also for reporting to funders and other organisations.

Following on from the eResearch 2023 BoF (https://conference.eresearch.edu.au/understanding-and-capturing-the-uptake-of-digital-research-infrastructure/), this session is for anyone interested in the uptake of DRI to share existing methods and approaches, challenges, lessons learned, and implementable, effective ways of measuring the uptake of DRI.

We are particularly interested in understanding what relevant parties, including organisations providing or funding digital research infrastructure, need to know about DRI uptake and how easy it is to collate this information. This includes identifying current quantitative and qualitative methods for measuring uptake, and evaluating which approaches have (not) been successful, and why.

Agenda:

1. Introduction

2. Lightning talks (5 mins each) exploring the uptake of digital infrastructure:

2.1 Two lightning talks from Australian organisations about approaches used to understanding uptake of DRIs

2.2 One example of an international approach

2.3 Questions

3. Discussion, exploring questions such as:

– How does your organisation measure uptake?

– How does this approach work for your organisation? What difficulties do you encounter?

– What infrastructure do you need for these approaches? What infrastructure do you (not) have?

4. Next steps
