Abstract:

There are a number of persistent ID used by researchers such as ORCID, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science Researcher ID. The case study examines the journey embarked upon by the Research Office in the adoption of ORCID for researchers. This initiative started in 2017 when the senior executive team recognized the need for Wits researchers to register for ORCID, given its extensive utilization in scholarly publications and grant applications. It required several iterations to achieve full integration into our internal systems.

The implementation of ORCID enhanced researcher visibility and improved the reporting of publications to the Department of Higher Education and Training. Continuous efforts are made to raise awareness among researchers regarding the registration and linkage of their ORCID IDs, which is monitored in collaboration with the Library and Research Office.
