Access to regional datasets with a level of granularity that is valuable to researchers is an ongoing challenge in the eResearch space. The SMART Infrastructure Facility (SMART) with the support of the Australian Urban Research Infrastructure Network’s (AURIN) High Impact Project program is tackling this challenge by showcasing regional datasets on the national stage.

The Illawarra Data Repository (IDR) is a collection of data sets that SMART researchers have collected, curated, and created since its inception in 2013. It is a regional, integrated data repository from the local Illawarra region that has a focus on electricity and water consumption, residential solid waste, demographics, transport, and various Internet of Things sensor data.

The project will develop a Geonetwork/Geoserver based metadata management system to manage and serve metadata and data to the AURIN community. The novel aspects of this project include the automated cleaning and loading processes of the IDR, the inclusion of real-time sensor data being fed into the AURIN ecosystem and the inclusion of rich utility consumption data.

The project highlights the benefits of relationships that local research institutions can and do have with local data providers. It is these relationships that have allowed SMART to collect and share many of these data sets. As a result, ongoing costs and maintenance are kept incredibly low. This makes this project one that is ongoing and sustainable even after the AURIN High Impact Project phase is complete.
