Planet Research Data Commons vision and recent developments

Abstract
The 2022 National Research Infrastructure Roadmap provides a clear path for Australia to build on strong existing foundations and deliver step-changes to support future national needs. The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) launched the Planet Research Data Commons (Planet RDC) in 2022-2023 to collaboratively develop and deliver sustainable digital research infrastructure for the earth and environmental sciences on a national scale.
Our nationwide consultation process identified the following significant data challenges: “Trusted Data Supply Chains,” “Integrated Datasets and Services,” “Modelling, Analytics, and Decision-Support Infrastructure,” and “FAIR, CARE and Indigenous Data Governance.” To address these data challenges, the Planet RDC is working with governments, universities, industry, and our partners in the National Earth and Environmental Science Facilities Forum (NEESFF) and beyond.
We will present our 5 year vision and outline the most recent developments of the Planet RDC. For example, with industry and government partners, we co-designed a process to define and map an environmental data and information supply chain, and will be piloting this with exemplar projects. We are working with NCRIS partners to enable federated discovery of and access to National Virtual Collections, and to create a skills framework. We have begun developing our modelling, analytics and decision support infrastructure by building on and enhancing existing infrastructure, and we will present our approach to reference architectures. Finally, we will outline our work towards implementing the CARE principles and a common approach to Indigenous data governance with our NEESFF partners.
