Improving the ways we acquire, store, distribute, and utilise data within and across research fields strengthens Australia’s resilience, enabling our society to prepare for growing global concerns as a stronger and more agile nation. The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) is well-positioned to address these data challenges as it has a unique depth of expertise in facilitating cross-organizational collaboration to establish national data capabilities. This poster will showcase the current expertise that ARDC offers to projects and partnerships and its engagement in national research infrastructure initiatives.

The ARDC hub of expertise provides organisations with advice and expertise to help them improve their performance in areas such as data governance, system and data architecture, artificial intelligence (machine learning), sensitive data, data management, FAIR data, digital skills and eResearch, data storage, retention, research software and research computing with virtualisation capabilities. ARDC delivers expertise through one-on-one consultations with partner organisations, organising national communities, conducting self-evaluation workshops, sharing (inter)national good practices, connecting relevant activities across Australia, and providing resources.

Examples of expertise delivery include data licensing to Atlas of Living Australia, data management self-assessment workshop for Griffith University, creation of a data governance framework for clinical trial data, data architecture for agricultural research federation, machine learning training map for Australian community of practice, Geoscience Australia-metadata scan, integrated marine observing system advice on cybersecurity, and the EcoCommons platform for container orchestration.

Within the expertise hub, we are now looking to the future and asking: “what will research organisations and industry needs be in 5-10 years?”
