The University of Sydney is one of the world’s leading research universities. It provides access to high-end infrastructure and services through Core Research Facilities, including the Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH). SIH’s mission is to work with the research community to maximise the value and impact of data to achieve research excellence in all spheres. A substantial component of this occurs via training, where SIH has partnered with Intersect to deliver workshops in computing, programming, data management, statistics, data science, artificial intelligence and bioinformatics, aiming to increase researchers’ efficiency and adopt cutting-edge approaches.

Partnership model

The goal of the SIH/Intersect partnership is to meet the growing and varied demands for researcher training and support. Intersect provides awareness, introductory and intermediate training on generic knowledge of tools/technologies and further supports SIH and other university activities. This enables SIH to deliver intermediate and advanced domain- and platform-specific training, and to provide support with applying the skills learned to research projects.

In 2020, SIH/Intersect trained the highest number of University of Sydney researchers historically (1,500+), maximising access to training through online delivery and reduction of no-shows, and increased engagement with the library, ICT and individual faculties.

This presentation will describe this partnership’s benefits and opportunities. This will be of interest to training providers from other universities, eResearch software engineers, IT and library professionals, and anyone involved in digital skills communities of practice.
