National Environmental Prediction System – System and Design

The 2016 National Research Infrastructure (NRI) roadmap proposed the setting up of National Environmental Prediction System (NEPS). The 2018 Research Infrastructure Investment Plan proposed a scoping study for NEPS. A working group was setup to conduct the scoping study through wider consultation with research community. The NEPS would enable transdisciplinary approach to problem solving by enabling domain scientists, computer scientists, economists and policy-makers to work together to improve the management of Australia’s environment. The working group has proposed a strong participation of NCRIS platforms, government agencies and industries in the development of NEPS.
The wider participation of existing NCRIS platforms would provide NEPS access to existing data and compute infrastructure. But the access and reuse of these infrastructure needs a stronger governance around infrastructure and information management and policies for seamless data sharing and models that will be used in the predictions.
The BoF will enable NCRIS platforms to discuss the development of NEPS and collective pathway required for successful implementation. Several aspects of the system from different viewpoints will be discussed including contextual, functional, information, technical, development, deployment and operational, enabling concerns of multiple stakeholders to be addressed. The BoF will have presentations on stakeholder engagements, gather experiences and gain input across different domains on how to develop NEPS and discuss some of the problems that can be resolved in short to medium terms by leveraging existing infrastructure.
