Abstract

The University of Western Australia (UWA)’s data planning processes and current DMP tool is not fit for purpose. This is due to a lack of integration with our researcher’s workflow and with other research support systems. As such, the University is unable to track and report on the management of its research data and confirm it meets local, national, and international standards and regulations.

As a participating institution in the Institutional Underpinnings program funded by the Australian Research Data Commons, UWA undertook a project to identify the requirements for a new integrated data management planning tool. In addition to helping address the immediate problem, this tool will be a central tenant in a broader programme of work to refresh and improve the University’s infrastructure to improve data storage and management across the institution.

The project involved consulting with researchers and stakeholders through workshops and identifying case studies. Outcomes delivered included a visualisation mapping how the tool could be integrated into various points of the researcher workflow, identification of metadata, functional and non-functional requirements and integrations will other enterprise systems.

ReDBox has been selected as new DMP tool and the University is in the process of implementation.

This presentation will cover aspects of the initial project and a discussion of the major aspects of the next phase of the project to customise and implement the tool and how UWA hope it will address some of the key research data management issues currently facing the University.
