Abstract
Semantically-enabled data in earth and environmental science has gained considerable attention due to its potential to enhance data integration, discovery, and collaboration. Semantic web technologies can help us to add meaning to data and organise, link, and integrate data in a machine-readable way.
Data come from various earth and environmental science disciplines, including ecology, geology and meteorology. These data sources often use different formats, standards, and terminologies, making integration and analysis challenging. The use of standard ontologies and vocabularies enhances the interoperability of data across different platforms and systems, fostering collaboration and enabling data integration from various sources. Domain ontologies provide common frameworks to represent and explain domain concepts (vocabularies) and enable the integration of these data sources.
During this BoF, we will provide an overview of some work undertaken in earth and environmental science domains (e.g., ecology, soils, geology, hydrology, biosecurity) to develop domain ontologies and domain-specific controlled vocabularies. In addition, we will showcase prototype semantic web applications and discuss some of the challenges and opportunities in the earth and environmental science to enable data interoperability within and across multiple domains.
The BoF will be a mixture of presentations and group discussions to bring the community together and build collaborations in developing semantic web artefacts for the earth and environmental science domain.
