The Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Water (DCCEEW) makes significant investments in on-ground environmental monitoring through the Regional Land Partnership (RLP) program across 53 Natural Resource Management (NRM) units. The success of the program is impeded by the heterogeneity of data collection protocols and representation. This has significantly reduced the data reuse, synthesis and analysis at program-level.
TERN, in collaboration with the DEEEEW is working on the development of standard monitoring protocols and associated tooling and data exchange standards for the Regional Land Partnerships (RLP) program and the Digital Environmental Assessment Program (DEAP). The project would standardise on-ground monitoring from the data collection methods to representation and publication. The initiative involves the design and development of monitoring protocols, data collection infrastructure, defining standard information model and data exchange protocol for the collected ecological survey data. The overall project aims to provide standards for site-based ecology monitoring from data collection through to publication, with the benefit of collecting high-quality data and improving data sharing and integration. The use of standard protocols and techniques for data collection and representation will improve the ease of understanding of data leading to substantial increase in reusability.
During this BoF, we will provide an overview of the monitoring protocols, collection mobile Apps and data pathway from collection to publication. We will provide an overview of data standards to exchange site-based survey data and vocabularies development processes to represent artefacts of the monitoring protocols. The panel discussion will conclude the BoF.
