Abstract:
There are several persistent IDs used by researchers, such as ORCID, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science Researcher ID. The case study examines the journey undertaken by the Research Office in rolling out ORCID at WITS. This initiative commenced in 2017 when the senior executive team recognized the need for researchers to register for ORCID, given its extensive use in scholarly publications and grant application systems. It took an iterative development approach to achieve full integration with internal systems.
ORCID implementation has enhanced researcher visibility and improved the reporting of publications to the Department of Higher Education and Training for research subsidy. The Library and Research Office continue to raise awareness and monitor the linkage of ORCID IDs within the institution.
