Our powerful network infrastructure, expertise and services enable Australia’s participation at the forefront of teaching, learning and research on a global scale and are fundamental to driving innovation in today’s digital economy.

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is a global leader in high-performance and adaptive computing, delivering the processors, accelerators and software technologies that power modern research, artificial intelligence, cloud, data centre and supercomputing environments.

Across the global research community, AMD technology supports some of the world’s most advanced high-performance computing systems, including leading exascale platforms used for scientific discovery, simulation, modelling, data analytics and AI. AMD EPYC™ server processors provide a scalable foundation for research computing, cloud and data-intensive workloads, while AMD Instinct™ accelerators are designed to support the growing convergence of HPC and AI across scientific and academic disciplines. AMD ROCm™ software provides an open software platform for GPU-accelerated computing, supporting HPC and supercomputing applications across areas such as energy, molecular dynamics, physics, computational chemistry and climate research.

AMD’s relevance to the eResearch community is grounded in a simple idea: access to advanced compute is becoming central to research competitiveness. As research institutions manage growing demand for simulation, modelling, AI, machine learning and data-intensive workflows, AMD is focused on helping provide efficient, open and scalable computing platforms that can support diverse research environments without locking institutions into a single technology pathway. In Australia, AMD technology already underpins major national research infrastructure. The Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre’s Setonix system is built on AMD EPYC CPUs and AMD Instinct MI250X GPUs and is described by Pawsey as the most powerful research computer in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the world’s most energy-efficient supercomputers. Setonix supports large-scale research computing across disciplines and represents a major step forward in Australia’s sovereign supercomputing capability.

AMD is also supporting the next generation of university research computing in Australia. The University of Queensland’s Bunya Phase 4.0 upgrade includes AMD EPYC 9005 series CPUs and AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, with UQ describing the expansion as its most significant supercomputing investment and a platform designed to support simulation, data processing, exploratory research, machine learning and generative AI. UQ has also stated that the upgrade will be available to all UQ researchers with a Bunya HPC account once online.  More broadly, many Australian higher education and research organisations are already using AMD-based compute within research and infrastructure environments, particularly through EPYC-based HPC, cloud and data centre platforms. As AI becomes more deeply embedded in research workflows, institutions are increasingly exploring AMD Instinct accelerators and ROCm as part of a more open, heterogeneous approach to AI and HPC infrastructure. This aligns with discussions AMD is having across the university sector around research computing, ROCm enablement, future Instinct opportunities and the importance of supporting mixed environments rather than forcing a single-platform model.

Through AMD EPYC, AMD Instinct, AMD Ryzen™, ROCm and the AMD University Program, AMD works with researchers, universities, research infrastructure providers and technology partners to help accelerate discovery, improve infrastructure efficiency and expand access to advanced computing. For eResearch Australasia, AMD’s focus is on supporting the community’s broader mission: enabling researchers to collaborate, analyse, discover and reuse information through sustainable, high-performance and open digital research infrastructure. The conference itself is positioned as a leading forum for researchers, data specialists, research infrastructure providers, technologists, software developers, policy makers and industry partners working to advance eResearch across Australasia
