Biography:
Dr Lesley Wyborn is a geoscientist, geoinformatics specialist and the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI), the Australian National University, and AuScope, and Research Data Strategist with the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC). She has more than four decades of experience developing research data infrastructure, standards, and interoperability frameworks for the Earth and environmental sciences. Lesley has played a leading role in international initiatives including IGSN, GeoSciML, OneGeology, RDA, and ESIP, and is a recognised advocate for FAIR and CARE data practices. Her work focuses on connecting data, samples, software, and research activities through persistent identifiers and sustainable digital infrastructure.
Abstract:
AuScope is Australia’s national geoscience Research Infrastructure (RI), which facilitates the collection of multiple data types, ranging from TiB-scale drone, geophysical, and satellite data to small-scale (MiB) long-tail collections in geochemistry/geochronology. Larger-volume datasets are publicly accessible via the AuScope Collections at the National Computational Infrastructure, whilst smaller-volume datasets are available from AWS-based repositories.
For some time, funders have demanded that datasets comply with both Open Science mandates and the FAIR/CARE principles; increasingly, there are additional expectations that datasets also be AI- and Decision-Ready. Lately, due to proliferating incidents impacting repositories worldwide from natural hazards, geopolitical actions, cyberattacks, and funding cutbacks, both funders and researchers are now asking for proof of long-term resilience and sustainability of their contained data assets. Taken together, these requirements create a complex universe for both researchers and RIs to navigate.
As stated in their AuScope Research Data Systems Strategy, AuScope is committed to Open Science and compliance with the FAIR and CARE Principles. To enhance the long-term sustainability and resilience of the host repositories for their datasets, AuScope is also participating in global RI Networks through a Memorandum of Agreement between the European Plate Observing System, EarthScope (US), Earth Sciences NZ, and AuScope for geophysics, and for geochemistry, membership in the international OneGeochemistry Initiative.
Using examples from two AuScope Opportunity Fund projects in geophysics and geochemistry, this paper will show how establishing compliance with FAIR, CARE, AI- and Decision-Ready requirements for individual datasets enhances the ability to participate in newly proposed Global Resilience RI Data Networks.
