Research can be a long, lonely road – How do you reach researchers and provide support for digital tools such as High Performance Computing (HPC), Cloud computing and technical skills like coding? How do you build and engage communities to share their knowledge in these areas? What resources are needed to achieve this and ensure its sustainability? And how to communicate all this effectively?

In 2018 we set out to address these questions within the Research Technology Services (ResTech) unit at UNSW. Fast forward till now, add a global wide pandemic, rapid change of working methods (e.g. face to face vs online vs hybrid), and other hurdles making the road an interesting one. We’ll explore these questions through the lens of our experience establishing a community team within ResTech at UNSW.  We also hope to encourage the research support community to keep striving, no matter what the hurdles and curve balls thrown into the mix.

This talk will include an overview of the training and events developed to engage the research community including Hacky Hours, seminars, Lunch & Learn sessions, info sessions and workshops, training in digital tools, hosting ResBaz as well as engaging external partners.
