Situation

The training service at New Zealand eScience Infrastructure (NeSI)  is focused on building the computational capabilities of researchers based in Aotearoa New Zealand. We provide researchers with the digital skills they require particularly where NeSI services are needed, while tying it in with national research priorities. However, in the post-covid world, it is becoming imperative to recognise what the gaps in research knowledge are, while motivating researchers to know that there is help available.

Task

Post 2020, we recognised a drop in numbers for Carpentries workshops nationally and this pushed us to think of ways to locate the key experts in the field and to reflect on the ever-changing landscape of eResearch in the country.

Action

This paved way for us to build out a National Trainer Network that can not only locate the researchers but also throw light on research areas that remain under-represented nationally. This is also a step forward in addressing the challenge of getting these experts to deliver training. This discussion will briefly touch upon the steps taken by the NeSI team to grow training capabilities in the light of this progress.

Result

As a talk on national eResearch capability development, this discussion will benefit from the views of those interested in the area. Over the years, we have strived to create such a dynamic national trainer network but struggled to consistently maintain this community. This discussion will benefit from the possible insight on community management techniques provided by our partners across the Tasman.
