Abstract:

The Coordinated Access for Data, Researchers and Environments (CADRE) project has established a data access management platform for the social sciences and related disciplines. The CADRE platform implements the Five Safes Framework in Australian research institutions and collaborating government and private sector agencies to improve access to sensitive data while decreasing risk, time and costs associated with providing access.

The CADRE data access platform was integrated with Dataverse, the data catalogue at the Australian Data Archive (ADA), in July 2024 to manage and coordinate access to sensitive data. The platform has improved data security and user experience by integrating details about people and their projects, data, and outputs together in applications for data access. End users can link and reuse existing information about their projects and collaborators, and custodians can evaluate this collated information against their access criteria.

In this talk I will discuss the ADA’s experience using CADRE for the management of data access. Improvements in service delivery include management of verified user identities and projects, facilitating approval decisions by data custodians external to ADA, and coordinating access for multi-user projects, including training courses. I will also discuss broader deployment of CADRE as integrated infrastructure for Australian data custodians and repositories.
