Biography:

Chris Mitchell and Angelika work at the Monash eResearch Centre, doing whatever is needed to make our researchers more productive and hopefully learning some cool things along the way.

Abstract:

In 2024 everyone is feeling the budget pinch, both at home and professionally. This is a story about the tools we used to create solutions for the CVL project and how those tools have been rehashed and rehashed. Each time just a little bit of effort delivers a sizable benefit to someone. It means we’ve made solutions on a shoestring budget. It means that under the hood many of our solutions look like very familiar technology, but by remixing in just the right way we solve a problem for a new set of researchers.

I’m going to talk about three major things:

1. The Machine Learning eResearch Platform

2. The use of CI pipelines and transient test clusters

3. Building a virtual cluster for masters level students to learn bio-informatics without making them first learn ssh and vim and all the other things technical people like me take for granted.

This will be a technical talk about hacking solutions rather than project
