Abstract:
A Secure Research Environment (SRE) is a controlled computing environment designed to protect sensitive research data, while allowing researchers to work effectively and collaboratively. SREs are an increasingly important infrastructure enabling data‑intensive research while meeting regulatory and ethical requirements.
This talk describes how we implemented an operational SRE platform at Waipapa Taumata Rau, aligning with the NIST 800‑171 framework. We will outline the technical and risk management approaches we used to translate the standard into practice and discuss the practical challenges of designing a restricted environment, including managing identity and access, vulnerability management, continuous monitoring and logging.
This session is intended for eResearch professionals interested in the realities of building and operating secure research platforms. We hope these insights provide a practical overview of the tools, design choices, and lessons learned from developing an SRE for sensitive research data.
