Abstract:
Recent advances in AI, in particular Large Language Models (LLMs), have transformed the way HASS research can be done. As these new AI systems are able to process, query, and interact with very large corpora of text data, new computational methods for HASS research have been enabled, which allow new types of research questions to be investigated. In this talk, we discuss a number of HASS research projects on which the Melbourne Data Analytics Platform (MDAP) has collaborated in the past few years, in which LLMs have played a central role in the research method and computational workflow of the project. We look at how the research questions have been constructed to make appropriate use of these new computational tools, as well as how quickly the research questions have changed from year to year, and become more ambitious, due to the rapid evolution of LLM capability and power. Finally, we share our experiences around the opportunities and challenges of supporting HASS researchers using AI and LLMs in their research, from the perspective of MDAP as a university research infrastructure platform.
