Biography:

Professor Andrew Rohl is a leading expert in the application of supercomputing and computer simulation technologies in materials chemistry and leads the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI). He has a long history in the development and application of advanced computing technology in Australia through establishing the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre in 2012, the creation of the Curtin Institute for Data Science in 2015 and leading the ARC Training Centre for Transforming Maintenance through Data Science.

Abstract:

High-performance computing and data infrastructure and services are critical for addressing Australia’s most pressing challenges: from climate change, to improving health outcomes through personalised medicine. In a global environment marked by unpredictable changes in policy, and market fluctuations, it is imperative that the country has the capability to provide these services, for its own needs and under its own terms. In this workshop, we invite digital research infrastructure providers and users from all disciplines and sectors to help us answer a fundamental question: what does a fit-for-purpose HPCD/AI capability for Australia look like?

Our premise is that Australia’s HPCD/AI system will provide compute, data, and AI infrastructure, with a focus on both operating systems at scale, and enabling innovation and advanced research that positions Australia well globally. This system could deliver access to multiple sites, through multiple pathways, including merit-based access and national priority-driven programs.

We envision that coordinating access to HPCD/AI infrastructure and services across facilities will be critical to enable seamless movement between users, institutions, and workloads, while strengthening links to industry and applied outcomes. Through facilitated discussions, we will invite providers and users of HPCD across Australia to provide input into shaping:

The design of access and service delivery models for HPC, Data, and AI/ML resources that support Australian research.

A proposed long-term, sustainable infrastructure renewal plan for Australia’s HPCD/AI capability.

Strategies to address and overcome authentication challenges to achieve better system integration.
