Abstract:

Building digital research infrastructure in our sector is trending towards the application of design thinking and movement up the participatory spectrum. Further up the spectrum refers to placing a greater degree of trust in the targets of these infrastructures, and further away from expert-led design, which is arguably the paradigm we’re moving away from.

In this talk we will reflect on the application and applicability of two different design methodologies in two different contexts: co-design in national digital research infrastructure at the ARDC, and the introduction of human centred design in institutional level infrastructure design at UNSW. We’ll consider how and why these different contexts and modes of delivery work, as well as how the two different settings are more or less compatible with different levels of participatory design.
