Biography:

Tom Honeyman has been working in various roles in eResearch for over 20 years. He ran the Research Software program at the ARDC from 2020 to 2023, during which he was part of the working group to develop the FAIR principles for Research Software. Most recently he has been a member of the team delivering the research data experience program at UNSW.

Abstract:

When the FAIR principles for Research Software were developed, the issue of governance of the principles came up given the original FAIR data principles are essentially fixed in place. To counteract that, we intentionally signalled the intention to revisit the suitability of the principles after a period of two years.

In this talk I will run through the results of a survey to assess whether the principles are effective, and the process to decide on changes. I’ll reflect on how effectiveness of principles can be measured, and what it means for principles to be owned and managed by a community. The lessons learned may be applicable in similar efforts.
